Declan McKenna performs sold out show in Kingston

Declan McKenna’s sold out semi-acoustic show was hosted by Banquet
Records at Przym Kingston and fans waited eagerly to see their
favourite artist perform.

The performance was originally planned for early August but was
postponed due to members of McKenna’s musical team having to self-
isolate. The show was rescheduled for October 24 and tickets quickly
sold out.

The indie alternative singer-songwriter from Hertfordshire rose to fame
after winning Glastonbury Festival’s emerging talent competition in 2015.

His set in Kingston was a celebration of the release of his latest album,
Zeros which peaked at number two in the official charts.

Supporting act Josh McClorey took the stage at seven o’clock to warm
the audience up, playing a set of seven songs before McKenna took
over at eight.

“Kingston! What’s the story? How are you doing?” said McKenna as he
greeted the delighted crowd. “We are going to play a special show for
you today.”

McKenna kicked off the show with 'Humongous', wearing his own
merchandise, which he thanked fans for buying, and occasionally
sipping from a can of beer.

The excited fans lifted signs expressing their love for McKenna and even
threw props onto the stage for him and his backing musicians to wear
whilst they performed, including hats, glasses and headbands.

McKenna jokingly reminded the audience not to throw drinks with ice at him as they have hurt him in the past.

His penultimate song was Brazil, introducing it as “an old school classic” which had every single fan singing along.

Arguably his most popular and most anticipated song, Brazil peaked at number 16 on the Billboard charts. His best-known song is described as being a critique of FIFA
awarding the 2014 World Cup to Brazil without acknowledging the corruption and poverty that affects the country.

He finished with British Bombs which had the whole room moshing and
thanked his fans and his backing musicians before leaving the stage.

However, the audience was not finished with the concert as they
chanted “one more song” after he departed, despite the curfew for the show being set at 9 o’clock.

McKenna fan Jessica Suwan had been waiting to see her favourite artist perform since she discovered his album 'What Do You Think About The
Car?' released in 2017.

“I had to buy my tickets through a reselling website. I wasn’t quick
enough to get them myself but I’m so happy I’m here,” said Suwan.

“The vibes of the show were so good, everyone here has been waiting
for ages to see [McKenna]. I just wish he played some of his older, less
known songs but I wasn’t expecting him to, seeing as the set was only
an hour long.”
